Volunteer Network International (V-Net)
responds to requests for assistance from
those who are disadvantaged in ways that restore health and
well-being to the people and the environment, promote self reliance
and cultural understanding, and preserve dignity. The project is
based in the
Claremont
area in Southern California's Inland Valley.
Founded in 1991, volunteers from around the world have
participated in projects serving people in need in Amazonas,
Guatemala, India and the United States. Projects involving V-Net
leadership, in total, have delivered more than $7 million in aid
and development, and include infrastructure such as a clinic and
schools.
V-Net projects are funded through the generosity of people like

Community
Lodge at Rosebud Todd County—the second poorest county in the United States—is
home to the Lakota people of the Rosebud Reservation. Statistics
revealed that six in 10 teenagers on Rosebud were addicted to
methamphetamines or alcohol (2005). Lakota Elders reported that when
re-involved in traditional cultural practices, these teenagers were
highly likely to recover. In 2005, Rosebud’s Ceremonial Lodge,
central to these practices, was a tiny, leaky, particle-board
building with no insulation from 110-degree summers and sub-zero
winters. Elders asked for VNET’s help in helping Rosebud teenagers
to reclaim their cultural traditions as a means of improving the
psychological, spiritual, and physical wellbeing of their community.
VNET’s projects in 2005 and 2006—funded in part by the
Annenberg
Foundation—delivered medical aid to the Rosebud
community, an artful Corn Circle public art installation, and
completed this important Community Lodge.

Animal Hospital of Catalina
Catalina Island is home to 3500 residents, and more than 1,000
family pets, as well as native, rare and endemic wildlife including
the federally endangered Catalina Island fox. Currently, all
veterinary services are provided from a 300-square-foot facility,
inadequate to meet minimum standards for compliance. Launched in
2008, the Adhoc Committee for a new Animal Hospital of Catalina
teamed with private citizens and the
Catalina Humane Society,
the
Santa Catalina Island Company
,
the Catalina Island Conservancy and others to raise the
necessary funds and secure the site for a new facility, slated to be
complete in early 2009.
